Five lessons from working on EU Horizon projects

Research consortia are a different world from product companies. These are the lessons that helped me deliver software in them.

  1. Agree on interfaces early. Partners work in parallel; clear APIs save months.
  2. Pilots are products. Treat demonstrators like real software with real users.
  3. Write as you build. Deliverables are easier when documentation is part of the work.
  4. Plan for after the project. Decide early what should live on as open source or a product.
  5. Keep it simple. The best architecture is the one every partner can understand.
